Grenadines

Bequia
Lying just nine miles to the south of St. Vincent, Bequia is the largest of the Grenadine islands – a compact seven square miles. Her history has been deeply entwined with the sea for generations. The age-old traditions of boat-building, fishing and whaling are still used.

Canouan
Set in the middle of the Grenadine archipelago, Canouan is an island of only 5 square miles. Like its sister islands, Canouan’s first settlers (circa 3,000 BC) were the Ciboney. The next wave of migrants were the Arawaks who arrived around 250 BC by canoe. They brought with them the rudiments of farming and established corn and cassava crops. Living as one with the land for over 1,500 years, the Arawak people of Canouan were brutally displaced by the invading Caribs (“Cannoun” is the Carib word for turtle).

Mayreau
Mayreau lies west of the Tobago Cays. It is the smallest (1 1/2 square miles) of the inhabited Grenadine islands, with a population of two hundred and fifty-four people. Mayreau is accessible only by boat. The island is rimmed by magnificent sweeping white sandy beaches perfect for sailing and snorkeling.
